This aquatint is from the 1978-79 untitled set of 15 aquatints in black (Schellmann 87-101), in which Judd explored different permutations of unprinted white paper lines against a black aquatinted parallelogram shape. The format is one familiar from two of his earliest series of woodcuts begun in 1961, one printed in cadmium red (Schellmann 37-62) and the other in cerulean blue (Schellmann 63-74). He later returned to this format in a series of 27 line etchings begun in 1983 (Schellmann 126-152).
