The planning process however, led to many frustrating years of dealing with federal bureaucracies for approval and environmental protests. Jeanne-Claude also passed away during this time in 2009. After 20 years and going through five years of legal arguments, Christo decided to abandon the project. Over the River still remains one of the most talked about unrealized projects of Christo and Jeanne-Claude today.
